Why I have to clean up

Emily:  You need to clean up the mess we made.
Me:  Why do I have to clean it up?  You made it.
Emily:  No, you have clean up because I don't want to.

Wait...that doesn't sound quite fair.  But how do reason with a very bright, almost 5 year old?  :)

Olympic Sports I'd Like to See

(This is my 200th Blog...since starting this blog.  No idea how many total blogs I've written.)

Olympic Sports I'd Like to See:

  • Synchronized Ski Jumping
  • Bobsled Cross
  • Celebrity Death Match Ice Dancing
  • Curling/Figure Skating Hybrid (Skate your routine, but avoid the sliding stones)
  • Half-Pipe for Skiers
  • Giant Slalom Obstacle Course (Watch out for that moose!!!)
  • Freestyle Biathlon (extra points for hitting the annoying guy with the cow bell)
  • Cross Country Figure Skating (After skiing 100 miles to a secluded pond, then you have to skate your short program.  Ski another 50 miles to a bigger pond and do your long program)
  • Hockey Curling (can you imagine the hockey sticks you'd have to have to get that curling stone to budge?!)
  • Real Skeleton (you go down the track on a real human skeleton...after which Dr. Temperance Brennan will tell you how that person died.)
I love the Olympics.  Always have!

Newspaper Article about my Family!

This was published in the Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald on Sunday, February 21, 2010:

Since the link probably won't work forever, here is the text of the article:

Loveland family hitting all the right notes with music

By Sarah Bultema
Loveland Reporter-Herald

Music is more than a passion for the Johnsons. It’s a force that brought the family together. And they’ve been living in harmony — and sharing it with the community — ever since.
“Music has just been a great love for us,” said Judy Johnson, matriarch of the family.
“We feel it’s a gift, and we feel an obligation to share it in any way we can.”
The musical medley began decades ago when Judy and Murell Johnson met in a college music class.
The couple were married, and both became music teachers. Judy instructed piano classes and Murell taught in the schools.
When their four children were born, the parents hoped to pass on their passion for a melody. They didn’t force the youngsters into any classes, Judy said, but instead made music always available to them.
“We sang together, from the time that they were very young,” Judy said
And sure enough, the kids caught the tune.
“It was a lot of fun. We were surrounded by music all the time,” said Angela, one of the couple’s daughters. “I could see my parents loved it, and it rubbed off on me.”
Soon, the singing sextet began sharing their voices with others, caroling for neighbors and performing at their church.
“We did it because we loved it,” Judy said.
“It was just a joy to all of us, mostly to be able to share it with others. We like the idea of making them happy.”
As they grew, the four children — Shauna, Angela, Craig and Neal — continued to crescendo their musical talents. Each one performed in their high school marching band, and three were in the school’s choir.
Even today, all the Johnsons have a voice in the art.
Shauna is the technical director at the Candlelight Dinner Theater. Craig performs with the Loveland Opera Theater. Neal, who is living in England, continues to sing every chance he can get, Judy said.
And Angela, who majored in music during college, now performs with Up in Lights.

“I love how (music) is an escape,” she said. “You can be having a really bad day, but you put on some music, and it takes you away.”
Through it all, those who’ve had the opportunity to listen to the Johnsons’ harmony appreciate the talents they offer to share.
“The whole family has been dedicated to music and the arts for a long, long time,” said Jeannie Lancaster, who attends church with the Johnsons.
“Their positive attitude and love of music really makes a difference for so many of us.”
But for the sweet-sounding family, it’s a passion they’re happy to share.
“Words speak to your brain. But music speaks to your heart,” Angela said.
“That’s one of the reasons I love performing it, so I can speak to other people’s hearts.”

My Top 3 "Broadway Showstoppers" Moments

The whole show is amazing, and it's fun from beginning to end.  But there are 3 moments during the show that I love.

The first is immediately after I sing "As We Stumble Along" from The Drowsy Chaperone.  The audience starts cheering before I'm done and I hold this great pose at the end and just listen to the applause.  It's exhilarating!!  I adore singing that song and to get that kind of response is incredibly fun!  I understand how divas are made now, but don't worry!  I won't become a diva.

The second is just before the Mary Poppins section starts.  I'm standing just off stage, on the next to the top step up to the platform.  The "overture" starts and the graphic comes up on the screen of Mary flying over London.  I look down and I'm wearing that same costume (more or less).  I just want to jump up and down and squeal "I'm Mary Poppins!" but that would be totally inappropriate...and I would probably fall down the stairs.

And the third...hmmm...do I want to share this one?  It happens in full view of the audience (if they happen to be looking at me) but it's kind of personal.  I have a little moment with one of my fellow cast members that I really look forward to every performance.  If you want to know what it is, just ask.  I just don't feel like blasting it out into cyberspace.  Sorry!

The show has been FANTASTIC so far!  We have 3 more shows to go.  We are having a BLAST!!!!!!!

  2. Yell at Sam & CJ onstage
  3. Collapse during the "curtain" call
  4. Get carried off the stage
  5. Get out of costume and chill for about an hour (miscellaneous costume zipping)

Not bad, eh?  It was low stress.  Now, compare that with my timeline for my current show: "Broadway Showstoppers", which opens TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Take Bekah/Stephanie's mic after "I Know it's Today" and put it on

  4. Go offstage during "It Won't Be Long Now" and take off my mic

  37. Exit SL, run around to SR for curtain call bow w/ Steffan & Josh
  38. Curtain Call
  39. PAR-TAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Know what you're thinking:  "That's INSANE!!!"  Actually, it's relatively low stress for me.  I freak out a little if I don't get my mic right away, though.  I have 4 wigs, 5 pairs of shoes and a different mic for each solo.  But other than that, it's not so bad.  And most importantly, I'M HAVING A BLAST!!!!!!  The show is really awesome!  It's a revue of songs that have been on Broadway in the past 10 years to celebrate the 10 Years of Up in Lights Productions!  We have some FANTASTIC performers involved.  In fact, everyone involved is fantastic!  You don't want to miss this!!!!

What should have happened/What actually happened

The following phone conversation is what I wish happened:

Me: Good afternoon, [Company Name]
Caller:  Hi, this is Customer Service calling about your copier.
Me:  Oh, my gosh, I am so glad you called right now!  The copier just blew up!  Paper and toner EVERYWHERE!  What the heck kind of crappy machine did you sell us?  Give me your name, because I'm calling the police!
Caller:  Uh.....*click*

The following phone conversation is what actually happened:

Me: Good afternoon, [Company Name]
Caller:  Hi, this is Customer Service calling about your copier.
Me: Um, we're not going to be interested, thank you. *click*

You see, I've been at this job long enough to know that the "customer service" thing is a scam.  They just want to sell you really expensive copier supplies.  They make you think that you are the service provider for your copier, but they really aren't.  I can usually get them to hang up by saying "What's the company name?" or "Who is this?" or "No, because I know you aren't who we got our copier from."  But one of these days...if I'm feeling a little extra devilish...I'm going to freak out on them.  When you've worked in an office as long as I have, you know that sometimes you have to create your own brand of entertainment.

Sunday Silliness

The follow is a collection of funny things that happened today/funny quotes of the day:

"If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how long would it take a grasshopper with a wooden leg to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle?" ~from a talk at church

"Oh, I'm sorry...I have to take this.  Oh!  It's my agent!  Hello?  Hey!  What?  No!  They want me to play Winnifred in a revival of Once Upon a Mattress on Broadway?  Absolutely!  Yeah!  I don't even care who is in it.  Well, if Mikeal Macbeth is in it too, that would be even better.  Great!  Talk to you later!" ~Me during my Up in Lights video interview

*explanation:  I went and got Emily and brought her back to Loveland so that she could be in the Up in Lights video*

Me:  Emily, remember I told you that Mikeal is the one who gave that balloon to Bekah?
Mikeal:  I gave a balloon to Bekah?
Me:  Yeah, remember when we came out there the day after Thanksgiving?
Mikeal:  Oh, yeah!  Hey, maybe that's why I lost my job.
Me:  Yeah, you gave that balloon away and that was it!  You're fired!!

"Ta da!!  I wanna be in a show with Up in Lights someday!"  ~Emily's line in her UIL video spot

Me:  Can you say it again?
Emily:  No, I only want to say it one time.
Me:  This girl is destined for the theatre and not film!!

Emily:  You ARE a dancer!
Me:  Ha ha!  No, I'm not!
Emily:  But you're dancing right now
Me: Uh, no, I'm just swaying to the music.

*insert Mikeal quoting a bunch of stuff from Moulin Rouge*

Okay, so I got a valentine from my mom & dad.  I opened it and looked at what my mom had written.  At first glance, I thought it said "You are annoying."  I was like WHAT?!  Second glance revealed that it actually said "You are amazing."  But the Z looked like a Y, and the M was kind of strange, so it totally looked like it said "annoying."  That's it...I'm moving out.  ;)

After we went over to my grandparents' house to deliver their V-Day present.  Emily was playing with the toys.  Grandma has some cone shaped spools in there left over from some quilting thread.  There are three of them.  She passed them out to Grandma & Grandpa & my mom.  Grandma said that Shauna needed one and passed it off.  Emily took it, gave it back to Grandma, and then announced:  "The old people have to have them, because you put it on your ear and it helps you hear."  BAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been a funny day, that's for sure!!!!

The Sound of Music Parodies

My SINCEREST apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein.  But seriously, when you are playing a nun in The Sound of Music, as I did in the summer of 1997, you get kind of bored.  Not kind of.  REALLY BORED.  Tons of down time.  So what did I do?  I wrote a couple of parodies on "My Favorite Things" and "The Sound of Music".  I've shared them with various people over the years; most notably the cast of the 2002 Loveland High School production of the show.  And now, in honor of my current sinus infections (and one of my least favorite things being sinus infections), here are the parodies.  Enjoy!

The Sound of Mucous

My day with a cold has come to an end, I know.
My nose is now clear, and so I don’t have to blow.
But deep in my nasal cavity, is something that wants to stay.

So I pause and I wait and listen for one more sound,
For one more ugly thing that my nose might say.

My nose is alive with the sound of mucous.
With stuff that’s been there for a thousand years.
My cold fills my nose with the sound of mucous.
My nose wants to blow ‘till I’m close to tears.

My hacking cough sounds like the birds that rise
From the lake to the trees
My wheezes are loud as the chime that flies
From a church on a breeze.
My eyes are so swollen that I trip and fall
Over stones in my way.
I sneeze through the night
Like a moose that is learning to bray.

I go to the hills ‘till my cold gets better.
I know I will sneeze like I’ve sneezed before.
My nose will be cursed with the sound of mucous.
And I’ll sneeze once more.

My Least Favorite Things

Raindrops on laundry and sharp claws on kittens,
Burning hot steering wheels and wet woolen mittens,
Brown paper packages from the Unabomber,
These are a few of my least favorite words.
Wild bucking ponies and burnt apple strudels,
Phone calls at dinner and overcooked noodles,
Wild geese that mess up the playground swings,
These are a few of my least favorite things.
Girls in tight dresses with extra large figures,
Snowflakes that stay and won’t scrape off the winders,
Silver-white Winters that stay all through Springs,
These are a few of my least favorite things.
When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad.
Those are a few of my least favorite things,
And they make me feel so bad.

I took a few liberties with rhyming on this one, but whatever...

And once again...my deepest, sincerest apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein.  They are rolling in their graves over these, I'm sure!!!

Stars and the Moon

I'm sharing yet another amazing song!  One of the great things about being a musician is that I surround myself with excellent music.  I have music playing constantly at work (I hate silence!).  There are so many wonderful songs out there, and here is one of them:

Stars and the Moon
from Songs for a New World
by Jason Robert Brown

I met a man without a dollar to his name
Who had no traits of any value but his smile
I met a man who had no yearn or claim to fame
Who was content to let life pass him for a while
And I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life like the movie stars led
And he kissed me right here, and he said,
"I'll give you stars and the moon and a soul to guide you
And a promise I'll never go
I'll give you hope to bring out all the life inside you
And the strength that will help you grow.
I'll give you truth and a future that's twenty times better
Than any Hollywood plot."
And I thought, "You know, I'd rather have a yacht."

I met a man who lived his life out on the road
Who left a wife and kids in Portland on a whim
I met a man whose fire and passion always showed
Who asked if I could spare a week to ride with him
But I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life that was scripted and planned
And he said, "But you don't understand -

"I'll give you stars and the moon and the open highway
And a river beneath your feet
I'll give you days full of dreams if you travel my way
And a summer you can't repeat.
I'll give you nights full of passion and days of adventure,
No strings, just warm summer rain."
And I thought, "You know, I'd rather have champagne."

I met a man who had a fortune in the bank
Who had retired at age thirty, set for life.
I met a man and didn't know which stars to thank,
And then he asked one day if I would be his wife.
And I looked up, and all I could think of
Was the life I had dreamt I would live
And I said to him, "What will you give?"

"I'll give you cars and a townhouse in Turtle Bay
And a fur and a diamond ring
And we'll be married in Spain on my yacht today
And we'll honeymoon in Beijing.
And you'll meet stars at the parties I throw at my villas
In Nice and Paris in June.

And I thought, "Okay."
And I took a breath
And I got my yacht
And the years went by
And it never changed
And it never grew
And I never dreamed
And I woke one day
And I looked around
And I thought, "My God...
I'll never have the moon."

I love this song!!!  I really hope I'm never this girl.  I would have picked the first guy...no question.  I'm still looking for someone to give me the stars and the moon.

"Beauty Standards"

I submit the "Beauty Standards" are the stupidest thing on the planet.  Who says that you have to wear make-up to be beautiful?  Who says that you have to use a ton of product in your hair and style your hair into submission to be beautiful?  There's nothing wrong with wearing make-up and styling your hair, of course.  But to say that you can't be beautiful unless you do those things is a total farce.  Here's my argument in picture form:

The following picture was taken last Tuesday night:

I have on full make-up.  I'm even wearing mascara!  (GASP!!  I usually forget that.)  I had used my flat iron (and a lot of mousse) to get a really cute spiky 'do for a LOST party (I was going as Cindy Chandler, the Oceanic Flight Attendant.)

Okay, so this picture was taken on Wednesday night:

No make-up whatsoever.  No product in the hair.  The only thing I did was blow-dry my hair for about a minute that morning. I think I look better in this picture than in the previous one!  Granted, I look very tired in the second picture (blame the 5 1/2 hours of sleep the night before, followed by a full day at work).

Nobody can tell me that I have to wear make-up.  I actually hate wearing make-up.  (In fact, when I'm in a show and wearing heavy make-up at night, I generally go make-up free every day!)  As for my hair, it's a constant battle.  It has a mind of its own and I usually have to submit to it's will.  I am at the mercy of hair that is not curly and not straight and VERY VERY THICK!!!!  I choose my battles with it, and the battle I fight is the gray.  And my flat iron is my best friend.

How sad that we live in a world where magazines and television shows and movies tell us how we should look.  How we should be beautiful.  They don't know squat.  "Beauty Standards" can bite me.

Urban Dictionary

Many people on Facebook are looking up their names on UrbanDictionary.com and are posting the definitions of their name.  I looked up my name on there and it came up with so many great definitions that I decided to put mine in a blog instead of my FB status.  (Besides, as of press time, my status is a collection of funny quotes from our Lost party from last night.)

So, here we go:

Angela: Small, short catlike person. Very easy to tease, but there's no reason to tease an Angela because they're very sweet. You can trust an Angela. Often, Angelas need a hug. Give your Angela a hug today.

I couldn't agree more! Except for the catlike part.

Angela:  a really beautiful and pretty girl that I love

Aw, thanks...whoever you are.

Angela:  A person with amazing eyes who is pretty amazingly awesome. Why is she awesome? Just because, that's why.

Nice.

Angela:  Super cool awesome funky loyal always there for you

I am really liking this!!!!

Angela:  Petite, hazel eyed young lady with a lovely smile and lovely body, who is nice to everyone she meets.

Um...I have blue eyes.  But thanks!

Angela:  A beautiful, angelic goddess who is kind and fair to everyone.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then there were some other ones that were not accurate at all and not worth sharing.  But I'm liking these!!

Oscar Nominations!!

I got 5 right!  Go me!

The Blind Side - Best Picture
Up - Best Animated Feature (Do I get bonus points since it was nominated for Best Picture as well?)
The Princess and the Frog - Best Animated Feature
Meryl Streep - Best Actress Julie & Julia
Sandra Bullock - Best Actress The Blind Side

What do I win?  I know...nothing.

Some other thoughts:

I'm still not sure that nominating 10 movies for Best Picture is the best idea they've ever had, but it meant that The Blind Side and Up were included, so I'm not going to complain.

Sad that Emily Blunt didn't get a nom for her AMAZING performance in The Young Victoria, but there was a lot of competition.

Yay for 2 songs from The Princess and the Frog getting noms!  Great movie!

Whoa, whoa, whoa...Transformers 2 got a nomination?!  FOR SOUND MIXING?!  Um...I don't think any action movie that I fell asleep in should get any nomination at all...especially not one for sound mixing.  (Yes, I'm probably the only person in the world who fell asleep during that movie.)

And once again, Pixar proves that they are the best storytellers around...another nomination for Best Screenplay!!!

Mmmmmm...I love the Oscars.  Not as much as I love the Tonys (for obvious reasons).
